UK SUPER-RICH 'HIT BY RECESSION'

"Never in the 21-year
history of the Rich List has the collective affluence
of those who live and work in Britain fallen by so much,"
said BBC business correspondent Joe Lynam.

The UK's super-rich have seen their wealth fall in the past year during the economic downturn, according to this year's Sunday Times Rich List.

The top 1,000 richest people in the country now have £258bn between them, it estimates - down from last year's record of £413bn.

Over the past 12 months the number of billionaires has fallen from 75 to 43.

COW GENOME COULD TRANSFORM WORLD FOOD PRODUCTION

One Hereford cow could transform world food production

The genome of a female Hereford cow has been sequenced, which could be a starting point for major improvements in the agricultural industry.

Analysing this blueprint of DNA code for the chemical building blocks of the animal is revealing the unique role that many of the genes play.

The information is likely to have a major impact on livestock breeding.

The study, published in the journal Science, was a six-year effort by more than 300 scientists in 25 countries.

Cattle now join an elite group of animals to have had their genome sequenced - a group that includes humans, other primates and rodents.

iPHONE CONTRIBUTES TO APPLE GROWTH

"Apple has been one of a few companies
where
business has been pretty strong throughout this economic downturn,"
said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at Northstar Investment Management.

Apple shrugged off the economic downturn to report a 15% jump in profits for the first three months of the year.

Sales of its iPhone more than doubled from the same quarter one year ago, while iPod sales also grew. However, demand for Macintosh computers dipped.

Net profit rose to $1.21bn (£0.84bn) from $1.05bn in the same quarter a year ago, on sales up 8.7% to $8.16bn.

The results sent the company's shares 2.5% higher in after-hours trading.

ZAMRY VS SIVAKUMAR

The Federal Court has ruled that Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and all six state executive council members used the right procedure in challenging State Assembly Speaker V. Sivakumar’s suspension order against them, and that it has the authority to hear their application seeking to lift the suspension.

Sivakumar, who headed the Committee of Special Privileges, had on Feb 18 suspended the seven and barred them from attending state assembly sittings for allegedly showing contempt for the House.

Dr Zambry was suspended for 18 months while his six exco members were suspended for 12 months each.

CABRERA WON THE 73RD MASTERS

Angel Cabrera, the 1st South American to win Masters

"This moment, and the (US Open) win in Oakmont,
are the greatest moments of my life," Cabrera said.
"It's incredible. I still can't believe it.
"This is a great moment for any golfer,
to win the Masters
I'm so emotional I can barely talk."

Congratulation Cabrera!

A
ngel Cabrera became the first Argentine to win the Masters at Augusta National on Sunday. He adds a green jacket to his 2007 US Open win.

No South American has won the Green Jacket, but Roberto De Vicenzo came closest in 1968 only to submit an incorrect scorecard, giving American Bob Goalby a one-shot victory instead of sending the year's first major to a playoff.

The 73rd Masters was really full of excitement, roars and drama. Though the sensational day had earlier been dominated by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the world numbers one and two, the final thrill was the three-way playoff between Campbell, Perry and Cabrera. At the end, the magical day belonged to Cabrera, who at 69 in the world becomes the lowest-rated Masters champion since the world rankings began in 1986.
