SCHOOLGIRL TO SET WORLD RECORD

Jessica Watson on Ella's Pink Lady

“Today, I am going to sail around the world.” – Jessica Watson

It's really astounding to learn that there is a schoolgirl who has a clear vision and sheer determination to undergo a treacherous journey to become the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world.

This extraordinary person is Jessica Watson, a 16-year-old Australian who sailed her Ella's Pink Lady yacht out of Sydney on Sunday on a 23,600 -nautical- miles voyage around the world.

After leaving Sydney, Jessica will heads northern New Zealand, then to Fiji, Samoa, South America, South Africa, then sail the final leg of 4,000 nautical miles back to Australia. The entire journey will take about eight months.

Jassica's endeavor has sparked a debate in Australia about whether someone so young should be allowed to try such a potentially dangerous feat. However,Watson and her family insist that she has studied navigation, electronics and maritime safety procedures and is an experienced and capable sailor.

Jessica also informed that although she will sail solo and unassisted, she will be in constant contact with her support team via radio, e-mail and a blog.

iPHONE APP ALLOWS DISSECTION OF A HUMAN BODY

"Anatomy Lab" lets the user move between 40 body layers.

"A lot of
medical professionals,
especially in physical therapy
and rehabilitative medicine,
are using it to educate patients
and show them
the body parts they're discussing,"
Nielsen told CNN

Here's a good news to medical students and practitioners.

A new iPhone app, 'Anatomy Lab' allows users to carry out a virtual dissection of a human body.

"called 'Anatomy Lab,' has been developed by researchers from the University of Utah and provides images of a real human cadaver."

"Utah professor Mark Nielsen told CNN that the application is aimed at medical and anatomy students who might not have the opportunity to dissect a real human body, but it's also proving a hit with medical practitioners."

The 'Anatomy Lab" has so far sold more than 3,000 copies.

"The app also comes in a cheaper, scaled-down version called "My Body," aimed at the curious amateur."

Microsoft launched on Tuesday Windows® phone, a new generation of phones from leading manufacturers and mobile operators that offer an intuitive user interface, powerful Web browsing, and access to an online library of downloadable services and applications.

Windows® phones— running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system — such as the HTC Pure and HTC Imagio are now available in retail stores worldwide in a broad range of styles and prices. More than 30 new phones in more than 20 countries will be delivered by the end of 2009

Windows phones offer the familiarity of Windows software, with mobile versions of Windows Live, Microsoft Office, Windows Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. People can access their work and personal e-mail accounts, surf the Web, look at a PowerPoint presentation, read a Word document or review an Excel spreadsheet.

The phones come with enhanced touch capabilities, including the ability to recognize a standard set of gestures, and Internet Explorer Mobile, a new, more PC-like browser that comes with Adobe Flash Lite support for better rendering and can log onto secure Web sites, so users can bank online or connect to their corporate networks.

With Windows Live on their phones, users can keep track of friends through Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or Windows Live. They can upload photos and videos taken with the phones to a Facebook or MySpace page, or have video chats with friends. INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE CLAIMED MORE THAN 1,000 LIVES

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the Indonesian people particularly to those affected by the earthquake which had struck twice close to Padang, capital city of West Sumatra province.

The first 7.6 magnitude quake struck at 5:16 pm local time (1016 GMT) on Wednesday, some 85km (55 miles) under the sea, north-west of Padang. During that time the armchair which I was sitting on in my house in Shah Alam, Malaysia was shaking for quite a while. I wondered what has happened. When I tuned on my tv to CNN, there was the breaking news on Sumatra quake. I felt so sad because I knew that the 7.9 magnitude (initial report) would claim numerous casualties and damages. The second 6.8 magnitude quake which struck several hours later may have caused further damage.

According to the UN Humanitarian Chief John Holmes, the death toll from the earthquake rose to at least 1,100. Another 2,400 people have been injured.Rescues are racing to save as many survivors from the rubble of crushed homes, schools, mosques, commercial buildings and shops. Thousands are still trapped in the wreckage. However, shortage of heavy machinery remain a problem.

Many nations have started giving assistance in the aftermath of this tragic disaster. The U.S for example has released USD 300,000 in emergency aid, and has set aside an additional USD three million in further assistance following an assessment of the disaster, said Ian Kelly of State Department.

As individuals, we also can contribute to the people in need. Be it in term of money or in other forms. I still remember a wise man said," Greatness of a person is not based on what he/ she has but on what he/she gives." So let contribute while we have and in return will receive contributions when we are in need.

IMF: WORLD ECONOMY TO GROW BY 3% IN 2010

" After
a deep global recession,
economic growth has turned positive,
as wide-ranging public intervention
has supported demand
and lowered uncertainty and systemic risk
in financial market,"said IMF.

It is a relief to know that the world economy is recovering from recession faster than expected as indicated by the International Monetary Fund in Istanbul today.

According to IMF in its semi-annual World Economic Outlook, the global economy will shrink 1.1 percent this year, less than the 1.4 projected and will rebound to 3.1 percent in 2010, more than a July forecast of 2.5 percent as more than $2 trillion in stimulus packages and demand in Asia pull the economy out of its worst recession since World War II.

For U.S.A, the world's largest economy, the IMF has focasted its 2010 growth at 1.5 percent, following an anticipated 2.7 percent contraction in 2009.

Meanwhile, the 16 European countries that use the euro are expected to grow by 0.3 percent in 2010 after a projected a massive 4.2 percent slump in 2009.

The IMF said that much of 2010's global growth will be dependent on Asia, particularly China and India which are expected to grow by 9 percent and 6.4 percent, respectively.

I hope that the recovery of the world economy will render us better livelihood in the future.
